Annual 1282 Rememberance Sunday Services.
10 Rhagfyr 2006: National 1282 Rememberance Services are being carried out at Abaty Cwm Hir during the afternoon, contact Sian Maredudd of the Abaty Cwm Hir Heritage Trust for further details. Further note those patriots who have chosen to hold their annual 1282 commemoration at Aberedw on the Saturday (9 - 12 - 2006) may visit Cilmeri cenotaph on the Sunday to place tributes there on their way to the afternoon rememberance services at Abaty Cwm Hir. Please note with the 1282 - 2007, 725th 1282 Commemoration in mind Antur Ysbryd Cofiwn will be making major effort to refocus patriotic attention on Aberedw, thus the 2007 national 1282 Commemoration we shall motivate and prompt into development will be based on Commemoration at Aberedw on the Saturday followed by social event in Builth Wells. Following on this there will be as above Sunday 1282 Rememberance Services at Parc ar Irfon, Cilmeri Cenotaph and at Abaty Cwm Hir. The Sunday Cilmeri Commemoration hence will be strictly non - political and provide opportunity for various bodies including local authourites to lay wreaths. Further information hence on these new developments shall be posted up on our COFIWN ARCHIVE blog which you may access via BlogCymru.com Do note this new Antur Ysbryd Cofiwn Blog and appreciate that this blog will not simply continue the Cilmeri story but in time will make available much information and pictures etc from the Cofiwn archive. As example Harlech Castle but non Edwardian Castles will do just as well (Pic (c) G.ap Gruffydd). If holding such local 1282 Sunday Rememberance Service then why not set up a '1282 Rememberance Garden' similar to such as set up at Cilmeri, see photo below:

It will be noted that in keeping with Ysbryd Cofiwn we remind patriots that that such rememberance is not just a matter of Patriotic mourning or self indulgence as the Cilmeri Rally on occaision has become. There is another purpose and that is to inform and to educate our people as to their history and this is best done on the street not just in a back room, a pub or only for children at School (If such be allowed). Thus the below must be seen not as just patriotic commemoration but also as most important Patriotic Political Action, if you wish PATRIOTIC AGIT - PROP ACTIVITY.
I. Wreaths or flowers placed on behalf of organisations. We request Patriots attending services to at minimum bring bunch of yellow and red flowers or posies of ivy leaves to lay at ‘’Rememberance Gardens’’ as part of service.
II. Initiate placing of small wooden crosses with ivy leaf labelled ‘Cofia 1282 * also if you wish bearing your preferred names of the following victims of Edward I’s conquest of Wales and colonisation as from 1282 – 3 up to eve of the last great war of Welsh Independence 1400 – 16 –22. they are as follows, as an example:
· Llywelyn III, Llywelyn ap Gruffydd d 1282.
· Dafydd III, Dafydd ap Gruffydd d 1283.
· Gwenllian ferch Llywelyn III incarcerated in a convent.
· Owain a Llywelyn Meibion Dafydd III. To die imprisoned.
· Gwladus sister to Llywelyn III & Dafydd III and her five sisters incarcerated in a convent.
· Gruffydd, Madog, Llywelyn a Iorwerth Meibion Owain ap Maredudd. d ?
· Rhys Wyndod imprisoned died in prison.
· Unknown fallen heroes 1282 – 83.
· Madog ap Llywelyn and others 1294 revolt.
· Llywelyn Bren and others 1315 revolt.
· Unknown fallen heroes revolt of 1345.
· 1378 Owain Llawgoch assassinated on command of the English.
III. Votive candles (Yellow & Red) may be lit by individuals in memory of aforementioned patriots who gave their lives for Welsh Independence, freedom and liberties.
IV. Other Service contributions: Such occaisions as above should resist be coming no more that opportunities for political posing and posturing and strictly observe commemorative purpose. Thus one welcome address is alright, perhaps poems are preferable to speeches but of course all is in hands of local organisers. Whatever? DO IT!

Ar Ragfyr 11eg, 1282, lladdwyd Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, Tywysog Cymru, ynghyd â miloedd o’i filwyr yng nghyffiniau Cilmeri wrth ymyl Llanfair ym Muallt yn ymladd i gadw Cymru yn rhydd o ormes Lloegr. Claddwyd corff Llywelyn yn Abaty Cwmhir. Aethpwyd â’i ben i Lundain fel troffi. Credir i gyrff ei filwyr orwedd mewn bedd torfol o dan gwrs golff Llanfair ym Muallt.
Fel sy’n digwydd bob blwyddyn ers 60au’r ganrif ddiwethaf coffeir y trychineb hwn yn hanes Cymru trwy gynnal seremoni yng Nghilmeri ar y dydd Sadwrn agosaf i Ragfyr 11 sef Rhagfyr 9fed eleni. Dear Editor,
Now that November 11th and commemorating those that lost their lives during the two world wars of the 20th century has gone past I wish to remind everybody that there is a remembrance day yet to come. On December 11th 1282 Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, Prince of Wales, along with thousands of his soldiers were killed, in the vicinity of Cilmery near Builth Wells whilst fighting to keep Wales free from English oppression. Llywelyn’s body was buried in Cwmhir Abbey. His head was taken to London as a trophy. It is believed that the bodies of his men lie in an unmarked mass grave under Builth Golf Course.
As has happened every year since the sixties of the last century this disaster in Welsh history is commemorated in a ceremony held at Cilmery on the Saturday closest to December 11th, that being the 9th this year. On Sunday, December 10th, a ceremony will also be held in Llys Rhosyr, in the remains of one of Llywelyn’s courts, on the outskirts of Newborough, Anglesey. Those interested in attending should gather outside Newborough Institute at 1.00 p.m. Before that in the morning wreaths will be laid by the Llywelyn memorial outside the Gwynedd County Offices in Caernarfon at 11.00 a.m.
It is hoped to see at these ceremonies all of those who believe that it is important to commemorate Welsh people who lost there lives on behalf their country in wartime. Although the number that died in 1282 was small in comparison to the number that died in the two world wars, as proportion of the Welsh population in the 13th century it was high. Remember also that Germany did not win either of the world wars and has never ruled Wales. In 1282 Welsh Independence was ended and we have been ruled by England ever since.

To emphasize this point make Celtic Crosses as shown in this posting, about 1' x 2' in size paint red if you wish and place on a round pole about size of broom handle (indeed a broom handle will do, paint yellow). Cofiwn had similar in use in 1982 and 1983 and even managed to dodge police and plant it in the grounds of Caernarfon Castle right up close to 'Carlo's Investiture Plinth'.
