CILMERI 1282 COMMEMORATION 2011

Returning to the work of the Cymric Consciousness society 'Cofiwn' founded in the early 70's and demising in the mid 80's. This blog will inform on the beginnings of 'Cofiwn' and explain the inspiration for it being established and the aspirations that motivated it's advance and achievements. This 'Ysbryd Cilmeri' blog will in main be an introduction and at same time tell the story of the annual patriots gathering at Cilmeri 1966 - 2006 towards a future Adfywiad Gwladgarol Newydd.

The Heraldry of the 1282 Commemoration: Baners and Flags.

ANTUR YSBRYD COFIWN gethin.apgruffydd@ntlworld.com

I cannot write about the heraldry of Cilmeri and our 'Adfywiad Gwladgarol' struggle in general without mentioning Toni Lewis, our Patriotic Herald in Chief. Here is a photo of Toni with a Baner Llywelyn at Castell y Bere in 1982. Below is a photograph of just a few of the many flags Toni made, most of which have been ''borrowed'', ''Liberated'' or stolen, this includes many of the wooden heraldic shields Toni also made. Over the years Toni made 100's of Flags many of which are still seen at any number of events, the least you could do is make one flag that will contribute much.

The photos here, are mostly of the heraldry of the ancient Cymric Princes and Royal tribes, there are great many of these and their full details can be found on the web for those interested in making such. It would be good if patriots made ones that represented their Taliath or Gwledydd, particularly needed are those of the Gwledydd of Gwynedd, Powys, Dehuebarth, Morgannwg and Gwent. You will also see in this photo Cofiwn 'Ivy Leaf' flags we made a great many of these for the 1282 - 1982 commemoration. You will also see in this picture the flag of the Patriotic Front and ceremonial White Eagle flag of the F.W.A.
Here is a flag I shall be making soon, the Red Stag of Gruffydd Gethin of Ynys Tawe, of course not everyone has ''artistic capabilities but making flags is not too difficult. in fact it's ''childs play'' so why not get your young 'Macwyfiad' making them for you? If no children then have a go yourself, designs can be photocopied enlarged to size required and traced on to material, then just make sure you use 'Acrillyc' fabric paint available in any number of shops as Artists suppliers. If the more intricate designs are a problem then at least have a go at making Ivy leaf flags

or the 'Royal' Fleur de Lys

Baner Llywelyn will be more difficult but not impossible, I can send 'Lion Templates' to those who wish to attempt making such

For those with absolutly no talent in the flag making department, I suggest you at least make yourselves a simple Black Flag as symbolic of mourning for 1282. Dozens even 100's of such as well as loads of Ivy Leaf and Fleur de Lys flags will look impressive. Flags symbolically representative 'Y Croes Naid' will be easy to make as examples below show:
This ''Croes Naid'' flag I ''inherited'' following Toni's death, I am not sure what he had in mind when he made this flag. However, it shows a Celtic Cross on the Royal Purple and thus I detirmine that is suitable to symbolically represent Y Croes Naid. An alternative version to make is quite simply that of a Red Celtic Cross on Yellow or Yellow Celtic Cross on Red backgound as shown here in this picture. I have also ''inherited'' a splendid 'Croes Naid' Baner made by Toni as shown in picture below which after being displayed at Aberedw, Rhosferig, Cilmeri and Abaty Cwm Hir I shall donate to the Edgar Pritchard Croes Naid Exhibition and another to Antur Llys Rhosyr.

Large Banners particularly those that are made to be carried on two poles are of course more difficult to make but not impossible, see the Cofiwn 1282 Llywelyn Baner and indeed the 'Balchder Coslett Baner' in earlier posting. You will require a large piece of White Calico about 6' x 4' and of course Acrillyc fabric paint plus time and patience. See ideas below re Four Lions and Cofiwn ivy banner designs.

Further, patriots of course will bring our National flags as Y Draig Goch and 'Baner Glyndwr', as for the ''accepted'' Baner Dewi Sant I find it's near enough contemporary ''Anglican Church roots'' not particularly appealing to me. Thus I have designed my own 'Adfywiadwyr' Baner Dewi Sant as shown in picture, this keeps the Yellow cross with black back ground but whole is on a red back ground, so both the red and yellow of our Banner Llywelyn and Glyndwr are used to make a more patriotic flag.
'Eryr Eryr Gwyn'
THE DREADED SUBJECT OF WHITE EAGLES.
The White Eagle has heraldic associations with Gwynedd and with one other Royal tribe of the Cymru and is usually shown in the form as picture here. The ledgend of the White Eagle arising to warn the Cymru of Invasion inspired the creation of the White Eagle Cross of Welsh Resistance, originating in the great 'Adfywiad Gwladgarol' 1962 - 1969 it became mostly associated with the Free Wales Army. However, since it has been adopted generally as an 'Adfywiad' symbol of continuing Welsh Resistance to English Rule. In recent times it has been adopted by BALCHDER CYMRU and has provoked much contraversy, most notably with their use of this flag on the annual Tartan Centre/Cambria Magazine sponsored St David's Day Parade in Cardiff 2006. This resulted in letter to Western Mail complaining about use of ''Fascist Flags'', yes a bit baffling that must have been a member of the Labour party having a bash. However lately an anonymous posting in the 'welshrepublicanforum' by a ''STIFYN'' made a more serious attack on use of the White Eagle, not least by 'BALCHDER CYMRU' for reasons they can answer. I however found this an out of place and uneccessary attacks on 'Adfywiadwyr' FWA Commandants Cayo Evans and Denis Coslett totally un warrented and I will answer this myself in due course in another posting. To return to use of Eagle Flags, myself would prefer it if 'Heraldic Eagles Flags' were used at Historic commemorations and 'White Eagle Cross' flags at Political events and demonstrations. However, if patriots want to use 'White Eagle Cross Flags' where ever they wish that is up to them and no one as the right to stop them unless of course 'organisers' of an event so chose to ''ban'' their use, as the St David's day parade organisers may want to do so from their platforms as they did with an Embassy Glyndwr banner in 2003 or rather told Embassy Staff to remove themselves from the steps/platform see above complete with white eagle cross flags.

Naughty! Naughty! Naughty! the ''Offending'' White Eagle Cross flag and below my design for an 'ADFYWIAD GWLADGAROL' Eagle flag

So there it is folks! Flags and Baners. Now how about some of you making some, unfortunatly Toni is no longer with us thus if you do not make a little effort to make some then commemorations will be less colourful as will parades. If you want to see how impressive lots of Baners and flags can make a commemorative event and parade, you should see our film footage of the great 'Cofiwn 1282' 700th anniversary of 1282 commemoration and parade in and around Builth Wells in 1982. Hopefully this footage will be available on DVD in 2007.
Note regards next years patriotic rallies and marches, nothing much untill the annual Cardiff St David's Day Parade of ''Tartan Taffs''.HHHhhhmmm!!! what else? not much of a parading country are we. However, in 1282 - 2007, 725th Commemoration which may be possibly held in a number of areas throughout the land. Possibilities to commemorate the Battle of Coed Llathen 1257 or Battle of Dinefwr 1282 and of course Battle of Moel y Don 1282 as potential for Commemorative Rally and Parade. However, to kick off the 1282 - 2007 Commemoration why not an annual Palm Sunday Rally at Castell Caergwle or/and Parade in Hawarden. There was a time when an excellent Patriots Rally and Parade was held in Abergele but families of the Abergele Martyrs requested such not be held. However, far better than having commemorative events up a Eryri as Balchder Cymru has been organising why not an annual 'Anti - English Monarchy/Investiture' Patriots Rally combined with Abergele Martyrs rememberance in guess where? YES! CAERNARFON, NOW WHY NOT? Excellent opportunity for all those ''Welsh Republicans'' to get out of the closet or rather out of their ''safe forum pages'' to organise a Rally at the Cofeb 1282 followed by a march to the gates of Caernarfon Castle. HHHhhhmmm!!! but that would be a bit to ''medieval'' for them really, like Cilmeri is? HHHhhhmmm!!!

Happy flag making, if you require further help just get in touch with myself at

Annual Cilmeri Commemoration Programme Proposals.

Annual Cilmeri Commemoration 2006: Proposals to concerned 'Cilmeriaid'.

Please note all pictures are G.ap Gruffydd (C) Ysbryd Cofiwn. No reproduction without permission.

2005: Pictures shows the ''Sacred Acre'' made presentable by flag display courtesy of the members of 'Balchder Cymru', their enthusiasm and efforts are applauded.

The following proposals are actually more suggestions but put forward so that others concerned with organising Cilmeri Commemoration may at least consider. Who exactly organises Cilmeri I do not know so the following could be proposals taken aboard by anyone. These proposals are in main of concern with the 1966 - 2006, 40th anniversary ''founding'' Cilmeri Commemoration. They may be taken as given with genuine concern for future of the Cilmeri Commemoration but with particular concern regards the fourthcoming 1282 - 2007, 725th Anniversary Commemorations taking place throughout the land through the year and concluding at the annual Cilmeri Commemoration (Also at Aberedw as from 2006) in December of that year. You will have already noted my concern is in main with new developments regards commemorative work at Aberedw, reasons for which have already been given in posting future posting Cilmeri 2006 to Aberedw 2007.
2005: Picture shows patriots gathered at Cilmeri cenotaph listening to speeches, following tribute to Toni Lewis made earlier by Gethin ap Gruffydd.

REMINDERThat 2006 Marks 40th Anniversary of the founding in 1966 by the Patriotic Front of the annual Cilmeri Gathering, that's your first off reminder. Your second reminder is that Llywelyn ap Gruffydd 'Tywysog Gwynedd' and 'Tywysog Cymru' was killed on 11 Rhagfyr 1282 at Aberedw, this is the patriotically correct line that patriots hence should follow. However, we still support the now annual tradition of annual gathering at the 'Sacred Acre' to hold Rali Cilmeri around the Cenotaph Coffad 1282. For it was close by at Rhosferig were 'Byddin Gwynedd' pitched camp on 10 Rhagfyr 1282 and whom after Llywelyn III was assassinated were themselves slaughtered at the 'Massacre of Parc ar Irfon' on the 12 Rhagfyr 1282. Athough commemorative activities are suggested by ANTUR YSBRYD COFIWN INITIATIVE on the same day at Aberedw, all agree that Cilmeri and it's commemoration ceremonies annually held on the Saturday may remain the main focus of 1282 Commemoration due not least it being more central and convenient regards parking and parading. At least this may remain the position for 2006 commemoration which may be the "Last Picture Show'' for some if certain matters are not delt with regards the Cilmeri commemoration. Matters I have brought to the attention of those concerned whom I believe are taking aboard and acting on my suggestions. as I would argue is the correct thing to do. We now also annually may commemorate there at Cilmeri that this Radical nationalist rally it is our longest running patriotic gathering, particularly of 'Adfywiadwyr Gwlatgarol' who will ever oppose and seek to thwart Investitures of any English Prince as 'Tywysog Cymru'.
2004: Picture taken at Capel Pennal is of Toni Lewis in a ''tradional Cymric Costume dress'' as befits his rank of Gwent Commandant F.W.A./P.F. Volunteer. Toni then as president of the PATRIOTIC FRONT may be seen as the founder organiser in 1966 of the first Rali Cilmeri as gathering in main of ''Adfywiadwyr Gwlatgarol'' (Radical Alternative Nationalists). Further information on all this will be posted up soon.
SEE BELOW REGARDS PROGRAMME PROPOSALS
TO IN MAIN PREVIOUS CONCERNED ORGANSIERS AND EVENT SUPPORTERS.

REMINDER Perhaps needless to say but i will, a special effort must be made to encourage a large turn out for this 40th anniversary Cilmeri gathering, at which ''Adfywiadwyr'' must reaffirm their

A Patriotic Pact and Pledge with the Covenant of the Ethos of Cilmeri.
Picture by Toni Lewis represents symbolically the long night our home land is plunged into following the death of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd in 1282.

This Covenant is our declaration that we not only attend commemoration to 'Cofia 1282' and the death of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd but also to remind ourselves and others that we gather at Cilmeri as ''Cilmeriaid'' to declare that ever we shall oppose the English Monarchy claiming sovereignty over our homeland. Further, that as ''Cilmeriaid'' we annually swear following reading of this covenant that we will resist all further investitures of English princes of Cymru. I would suggest that this covenant be read out to conclude the DAY OF COMMEMORATIONS AT CILMERI, followed by the National Anthem, then I suggest followed by the ''Patriotic Baptisms'' (organised by B.C.) and this year at least a torch light parade with 40 torches or 40 candles led by CAMBRIA BAND back to Tafarn Llywelyn. This has been done once before and it looks excellent on film, which we hope to have on DVD with other Cilmeri footage by Cilmeri 2007, hopefully? To make torchlight procession look effective there is need for the Sun to have gone down and darkness truely prevails, this may not be possible to carry out every year but for 40th anniversary an effort be made.
Picture by Toni Lewis symbolically represents the new golden dawn as annually ''Adfywiadwyr Gwladgarol'' gather at the Cilmeri cenotaph but only for as long as they remember why they are there. Others may assemble annually at Cilmeri just to 'Cofia 1282' but ''Adfywiadwyr Gwir'' gather there annually to reaffirm the patriotic pact and pledge to the Covenant of the Ethos of Cilmeri, swearing to continue opposition to the English Monarchy. I can personally see no reason for so called ''Welsh Republicans'' to be there unless it is for this purpose, so stand fourth ''Welsh Republicans'' or move on to Garreg Wasted which is perhaps the rock you need to stand around waving your Tri - Colours? (See future posting on subject of ''Republicans'' at Cilmeri.

Cilmeri 2006 is important as 40th Anniversary and thus I hope tribute will be made to it's founder Toni Lewis, then president of the Patriotic Front. However, in 2007 we will be marking the 25th anniversary of the great 1982 Cofiwn Cilmeri gathering and at same time the 725th anniversary of 1282, thus the big one? So, Cilmeri 2006 must be the launching platform for Cilmeri 2007 and thus it is a priority that all problems are sorted and presentation made better not least in public declarations. I would suggest a possible best way forward to solve problems and differences so no one need feel that compromises of patriotic principles or that convictions have to be set aside. All that is needed is the recognition that the annual Cilmeri gathering is a DAY OF COMMEMORATIONS in four parts/ceremonies at the Cilmeri cenotaph and they be as follows:
2005: Picture shows Gethin ap Gruffydd rising up 'Baner Llywelyn' at Rhosferig, following which this flag is taken across the ''Killing Ground'' to Parc ar Irfon. If wishing to do the same wear good boots as protection against mud plus really check out the pathways on maps as the signposts are often hidden away by hedge growth or may have been taken town. It is so easy to meander of course so take care.

Prologue: ''Osgordd Gwynedd'' will assemble at 11:00 am annually with others from meeting place at Eglwys Llanganten and walk to Rhosferig to rise up 'Baner Llywelyn'', then also the flag of Aberffraw/Gwynedd and of course Cymru Rydd. Please note those who wish to do so may later in the day or on the morrow lay flowers near Builth Golf Course at Parc ar Irfon where 'Byddin Llywelyn' were massacred. Ivy leaves may also be thrown into the waters of Afon Irfon from Bont Rhosferig which is close by.

2005: Picture shows Afon Irfon taken from Bont Rhosferig, a river that runs red with the blood of our Welsh Warriors through the veins of all true patriots. My God! that's a bit over the top and romantically ''Ultra Nationalist'' but it sounded so poetic as it went through my mind. HHHhhhmmm!!!! Am I getting a bit too ''Retro'' here? What ever, remember scatter Ivy on the waters of the Irfon in memory of the massacred 'Byddin Llywelyn'. Slaughtered probably on the 12 Rhagfyr 1282. See the wrttings of Welsh Historian Anthony Edwards which i will make more detailed mention of soon.

These are addidtional annual 'Cofia 1282' commemorative activities that Ysbryd Cofiwn initiated last year as well as a walk across the ''battle field'' (Killing ground) from Rhosferig to Parc ar Irfon. Note very muddy at this December time of year which I found to my cost, as i carried 'Baner Llywelyn'' along this route in tribute to Toni Lewis who had died month previous. I had then placed this 'Baner Llywelyn' at the Cilmeri Cenotaph after presenting it to representatives of Gwynedd. The following day this 'Baner Llywelyn' was presented to representatives of ANTUR LLYS RHOSYR who now have it in their safe keeping. So to proposals and they are just that but made after much thought with many consideratios to the fore, I see below as best way to avoid future problems that no doubt will arise as often stirred up by the English Secret Service 'Agents Provocutuers' who as well make of Cilmeri Commemoration an annual ''Jam Pot'' event. Though today they are more likly to use ''Honey Trap'' web sites, does that make you paranoid? No need if you are careful and question of all you see and read, so you have been warned. TAKE CARE!!!!!!!!!

P1: 12 Noon an Opening Ceremony by representatives of Antur Llys Rhosyr and of ''OSGORDD GWYNEDD'', supported by Cymdeithas Gwenllian and other 1282/Llywelyn ''Direct Interest bodies''. P1 Ceremony Convenor will be?

P2: 12: 30 pm. During this part/Ceremony ''history Societies'' will place wreaths, I suggest this be organised by Fforwm Hanes Cymru. This will be kept formal and simple with verbal tributes also allowed as requested. P2 Ceremony Convenor will be ?

P3: 1 - 2: 00 pm be regarded as an ''OPEN HOUR'' for representatives of other organisations and local authorities will be allowed to lay wreaths and make verbal tributes, This will particularly be an important feature of 2007 Day of Commemoration. Personally i consider it appropriate and thus suggest that Antur Llys Rhosyr * organises this. P3 Ceremony Convenor will be?

* I would hope in time a 'Cymdeithas Llywelyn ap Gruffydd' be established and then would they be responsible for Part Three as noted above. I find it amazing there exists a Cymdeithas Gwenllian and not a Cymdeithas Llywelyn III, After all there exist a number of societies to commemorate Owain Glyndwr but none for Llywelyn the last native prince of Aberffraw and of Gwynedd, if anyone is interested in establishing such I would of course assist to such end. Especially if it meant such society could assume responsibilities regards commemoration 1282 - 2007, 725th Anniversary of 1282 in Gwynedd, nationally and contribute to Aberedw and Cilmeri 2007.

NB: I hope it is not lost on one and all that I have suggested this programme so there are no argument about ''extremists'' or ''moderates'' and it is very clear who is organising what and which part is ''historical'' and which part is ''political''. So hopefully that will help sustain much ''unity and solidarity''. I also propose on basis of this, there is no need for central committees and time wasting as each part can be 'Autonomous' and each part have it's own organisers to get on with the organising of and publicity for it's particular part/ceremony/contribution. BEING CLEAR WHO IS ORGANISING WHAT AND WHEN, TIMES ETC AND PUBLICALLY DECLARING SUCH. For the sake of some central coordination and liaision I suggest that ANTUR LLYS RHOSYR or 'OSGORDD GWYNEDD' (Or a Cymdeithas Llywelyn?) , I propose is responsible and for calling of a meeting at future suitable time, of all present and other ''bodies'' with an interest in a Cilmeri 2007.
Thus. can it be any easier and any less of a burden or problem that as above and below. I THINK NOT!

However note, that regards 2007 event, if it is desired to repeat the event of a march led by a BAND into and around Builth Wells as in 1982; then this programme will have to be ''telescoped'' to allow for such a ''Long March''. Though in 1982 remember we bussed it to the big bridge and marched in from there, the same may be repeated or from the Towns car park deciding in advance if as in 1982 the conclusion is in the car park. Off course as different from 2006 the 2007 event will cost much more money. Any meeting to discuss all this needs to appoint a financial director to get on with this; issuing appeals and chasing grants etc. My personal contribution is with others of ANTUR YSBRYD COFIWN getting our Cilmeri Film Archive on to DVD so all may have a copy?

2 - 3: 00 PM BREAK AT TAFARN LLYWELYN.

2005 Picture taken by? if i am informed who by I will give credit. Picture shows march from Tafarn Llywelyn to the Cilmeri Cenotaph but what's wrong? well as far as i am concerned. No not the march itself that is organised in an attractive and orderly fasion with 'THE 18 TEILU' of the ''Baner Brenhinol Cymru - Honour Guard''. However something is not ''historically correct'' and I will deal with this more fully else where in another posting on subject of: USE OF BANERS AND FLAGS AT CILMERI AND OTHER HISTORY COMMEMORATIONS but note i mention again below.

THE TRADITIONAL RALLY 'ADFYWIAD GWLADGAROL' CILMERI.

P4: 3:00 pm
start of the traditional annual 'Adfywiad Gwladgarol' Radical Nationalist Political Cilmeri Gathering preceeded by traditional march form Tafarn Llywelyn to the Cenotaph for an hour of Patriotic Political Speeches, Patriotic Songs and traditional Union Jack Burning. Concluding with reading and reaffirmation of the Patriots Covenant with the Ethos of Cilmeri, Anthem and patriotic baptisms and then the torch light parade back to Tafarn Llywelyn possibly this will take place by 4:30 pm, so should be dark? Back at Tafarn by 5:00 pm for an evening of Patriotic Socialising. Organised by the Patriotic Society 'BALCHDER CYMRU' who as last year are responsible for 'Sacred Acre' site preparation. P4: Ceremony Convenor Adam Phillips?

2005: Picture shows some members of ''THE 18'' making tribute to Toni Lewis following the Rali 'Adfywiadwyr Gwlatgarol' of 2005. An ''anonymous wriiter'' in one of those ''republican forums'' has criticized 'THE 18 TEILU'' confusing them possibly with a previous ''Meibion Glyndwr Colour Party''. As I suggested the idea of 'THE 18' to BALCHDER CYMRU as an initiative with purpose for carrying in time of all the old medieval baners of our Gwledydd and royal tribes of the Cymru, complaints about ''uniforms'' are unfounded. The ''18 TEILU' (Teilu preferable to Tuelu, see laws of Hywel Dda) are note wearing nothing more ''militeristic'' that might be worn by the St John's Ambulance Brigade, please note the use of Ivy leaf as Beret Badge and the chest bands made up of the ''Royal Colours of the Cymry''. So please give the lads a break as they are doing a good job, myself I possibly would have gone for Red Shirts and Yellow Bandanas with great big green ''Basque Style Berets'', am I being an ultra nationalist fashion victim? or just being ''militeristic'' influenced by that heroic Italian Patriot and ''Republican/ Royalist'' GARIBALDI? (see picture following picture below). Alternative to Garibaldi is Mazzini and I suggest that Cilmeri's so called ''Welsh Republicans'' read up on he and his disillusionment with Garibaldi and why, just might to give them some good political education in which they are definatly lacking me thinks! Available on request my articles on ''Welsh Republicanism'' as a failed ''Political Ideology'', this may be useful? Myself whilst having a touch of the ''Garibaldis'' in the 60's, these days put myself more in the Mazzini Camp.

Picture shows Adam Phillips and the Balchder Cynru ''Red Shirts'' (not quite a 1000 but give them a few more years?) at Cilmeri Commemoration 2002?
2006:Picture shows a Garibaldi Inn sign, where is it? I know but do you? I am very interested to know how this public house got this name, is there a Garibaldi connection to Cymru? I know some one has put on the web that Garibaldi's grandmother came form Wales but I think that is a ''wind up'' surely? In London I once had flat overlooking Mazzini's exile cottage which enthused me to read up on the RISORGIMENTO aka the Italian Resurgence. learnt that Mazzini was visited in London by Thomas Gee but know of no other ''Welsh Connections'', do you? Yes! I have gone of track a bit but not totally of track, see my criticisms of so called ''Welsh republicanism'' soon to be published else where. DETAILS IN DUE COURSE.

I would suggest you prepare to attend with black flags with 1282 in white letters there on to remind firmly that we are there in the main to mourn the death of our prince Llywelyn III and slaughter of the warriors of Gwynedd. However, out of defeat shall arise victory, so let the White Eagles Fly

Preferably 'Heraldic Eagles' prominently to the fore after all this is an gathering to commemorate an historic event, these 'Heraldic Eagles' are the ones that should be seen displayed at the 'Sacred Acre'' (site of the Cilmeri cenotaph) and by 2007 hopefully enough will have been made to have put up on flag poles with the 4 Lions Passive and 1282 Black Flags along side of the road from Tafarn Llywelyn to the 'Sacred Acre'.

I am not opposed to the 'White Eagle Cross' flag but regard this more as a ''political flag'' to be used at protests but I am not opposed to they being carried on the march from Tafarn Llywelyn or carried by patriots around the cenotaph during the ''Adfywiad Gwladgarol'' (traditional radical nationalist) cenotaph ceremony which annually hence I suggest be the closing contribution to a DAY OF COMMEMORATION AT THE CILMERI CENOTAPH.
2005: Pictures shows close up 'Baner Llywelyn' rised up at Rhosferig prior to Cilmeri Commemoration of 2005.

However, before the Eagles can fly the Lions must roar in the wind and by this I mean that there is a need to make many more 'BanerI Llywelyn', that is the 4 lions passive the Royal Standard of Gwynedd which also needs to be to the fore. The one shown above was made by Toni Lewis RIP, However, it will be more than welcome if others pitch into some flag production and make some more 'BanerI Llywelyn/Gwynedd', Toni was very much our Patriotic Herald in Chief and made 100's of flags in his time for us but it is so difficult to get patriots to even make one flag. I and a few others do so but if we want to make COFFAD 1282 in 2006 and 2007 spectacular we need patriots to start making more flags asap. Anything else need be said? Not by me but I am sure you willl have your own views and opinions which I suggest you discuss amongst yourselves and make decisions on. All I have contributed above are but suggestions not even affirmative proposals, it's up to you?
2004: Picture shows Adam Phillips of 'BALCHDER CYMRU' helping Toni into the ''Sacred Acre'', in many ways it is quite symbolic and I should not have to explain why as in the following year Toni would die. Over recent years many of our ''Hen Cilmeriaid'' have passed away but it is good to see that a younger ''Cilmeriaid Newydd'' are replacing them as future ''Adfywiadwyr Gwlatgarol'', I hope? We shall see in time as it will be this generation that they will have to rise in resistance to another ''English Pretender'' seeking title of 'Tywysog Cymru'. I guess for us ''Grey Beards'' it is all over but for showing a little guidence but protesting? Give me a break! Time I moved on, I have done 45 years of this ''Patriot Game'' now time i sat back and just wrote an history.
2005: Picture shows an 'A' but where is it? look out for the 'A' at ABEREDW.
This year 2006 I will be for most part spending day at Aberedw to advance developments there for 1282 - 2007, 725th Anniversary commemoration. In 2007 I will be around at least for the march into and around Builth Wells, so if i do not see you this year I will at COFFAD 1282 - 2007, hopefully?

The below is working towards:

725th Anniversary of the death of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd and the conquest of Cymru.

Introduction

My role as a ‘Welsh Remembrancer’ began in 1966 when I helped Toni Lewis organise the first gathering of patriots at Cilmeri, although then I was more concerned with advancing the Patriotic Front and in following years up to 1969 in forwarding the struggle against the Investiture of an Englishman as Prince of Wales. It was only after imprisonment in 1969 and then after self imposed exile to Dublin 1970 – 72 that I returned to Cymru more fully aware of the power and potential use of history in political struggle. I had learnt much in Ireland and upon return to Cymru founded the National Commemoration Association which in but short time became Cofiwn. The history of all this I will inform of at another time in further postings, I must of necessity now cut to the chase and get down to the immediate work ahead. Even though Cofiwn demised some years back I have ‘’inherited’’ it’s archive both textual and in film, much has already been deposited at the National Library of Wales in the Ty Cenedl Collection but much still remains for me to record and archive. Thus it is with two 1282 Cilmeri anniversaries on the horizon I must focus attention on in this period in my life, first regards the founding of the annual Cilmeri gathering in 1966 to the formation of Cofiwn and Cilmeri thereafter up to 1982. This year of 2006 we mark the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Cilmeri gathering and in 2007 we mark the 25th anniversary of the great Cofiwn organised gathering in 1982. Of course 2007 marks the 725th anniversary of 1282 and the murder of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, not at Cilmeri but at Aberedw.
Pic 2005:Hills above Aberedw.
Thus you will note below certain new developments in association with these anniversaries across 2006 into Rhagfyr 2007, in the main it means my attention will in practice be given over to producing of a book and a DVD film on the aforementioned subject matter. You will be kept fully informed of developments in this area which will be tied in with an exhibition all to be made public at the 1282 – 2007 commemoration. Other than this I am prepared to research and present ideas for commemorative events and activities keeping in mind that in 1982 Cofiwn held a year long programme of events and other activities in communities throughout the land. Information on such I begin to present below for your attention.
Potential Programme.

I have no intention of organising a great deal as I and others did with Cofiwn in 1982 for the 700th anniversary of 1282 but I am prepared to do some research and put forward ideas others as appropriate may wish to embark on. Plus providing other information and assistance as and when possible. This time around first and foremost I shall be focusing on promoting the patriotic correct history of 1282 as now made clear to us by Historian Anthony Edwards in the following pamphlets, which I advise you obtain and they are:

* Marwoliaeth Llywelyn ap Gruffydd, Y Gwirionedd.

* The Massacre at Aberedw.

* Appointment at Aberedwy.

* The Ghosts on the Fairway.

* Letters of a Peacemaker.

Regards this more truthful account of this chapter of our history, it now provides us with a dilemma. That of the Cilmeri Cenotaph and annual Cilmeri commemoration held there sice 1966. The latter may continue to be a focal point for purpose of visiting to lay wreaths or flowers if wished but many may feel as I do that the annual Cilmeri Commemoration not only is some what of a distraction from the truth but some even consider it has reached it's ''Sell By Date''. If we are to promote a more patriotically truthful account of the last days of Llywelyn III we need to focus more attention on Aberedw rather than Cilmeri. Thus with this in mind note the following potential annual TAITH COFFAD 1282 we are promoting as journey to sites associated with the days of 10, 11 and 12 Rhagfyr 1282. I have devised a programme to follow annually individually or as groups over period of one or two days as may please them, I have provided times that may be followed but not observed strictly but simply as a guide.
Pic 2005: Having raised Baner Llywelyn at Rhosferig, in this photo I am setting out to walk to Parc ar Irfon. If doing the same at this time of here wear good walking boots as the ground is very muddy. Further note that even though pathway maps are available from Builth TIC the paths themselves are not marked well at all.

* 11: 30 am. I have suggested than an Osgordd Llywelyn/Plaidwyr Gwynedd Opens day of 1282 commemoration by rising up Baner Llywelyn at Rhosferig (Lluest Llywelyn 10 Rhagfyr 1282) and continuing opening ceremony at Cilmeri at 12: noon with representatives of Llywelyn III Interest Societies. If such fails to do so then individuals may continue as they please. NB 11:00 am meet near Llanganten Church, near pentre Cilmeri for short walk to Rhosferig. (Continued observance of Eglwys Llanynys event only undermines the true account of the murder of Llywelyn III, for if he had been at Llanynys then it means he was returning from Aberedw and that of course was not possible as he was dead). All welcome to attend this event which also opens the annual 1282 commemoration in central Cymru, if you arrive late then rise up your own ‘Baner Llywelyn’ and then continue our COFFAD TAITH 1282 as noted below.
Pic 2005: Afon Irfon at Bont Rhosferig Parc ar Irfon.
.
* 12: 30 Please place tributes at Parc yr Irfon and throw ivy into waters of the Irfon from Bont Rhosferig to mark event of the massacre of Byddin Llywelyn on 12 Rhagfyr 1282.

* 1: 00 Refreshments Break/Lunch at Caerberis Hotel near by or if wished in Builth.

* 2: 00 Visit Builth Castle.

* 3: 00 Visit Aberedw Castle.
Pic 2005: Remains of Castle at Aberedw, suitable for a respectful commemoration but I suggest one that is strictly non - political, the politics can be left at Cilmeri and an Aberdew commemoration be one of more historical signifigance. If interested in helping to organise or attending such this coming 9 Rhagfyr 2006 and there after let me know, I have no intention of organising such myself but others may wish to do so. If there is sufficient interest shown I will put people in touch with one another, they may then jointly organise an event and possibly during course of day discuss future commemoration in years to come as an ''alternative'' to the more political Cilmeri Commemoration. This arrangemone should suit most including ''Stifyn'' and then if staying in central Cymru over 'Cofia 1282 Rememberence Weekend Cilmeri cenotaph and Cofiwn Llywelyn memorial at Abaty Cwm Hir may be visited on the Sunday.
* 3: 30 Placing 1282 Rememberance tributes at Yew Tree by Gate in Aberedw Church in memory of Llywelyn ap Gruffyd, his priest and 18 of his body guard killed at Aberedw.
Pic 2005: St Cewydd's Church at Aberedw.

* 4: 00 Evening meal at the Severn Star Restaurant in Aberedew.
Pic 2005: The Seven Stars Tafarn at Aberedw, I recommend the menu, the meals are excellent. I suggest you book in advance. If wishing to stay in Aberedw the Saturday night, go on web to search out local B&B accomodation.

This year and in other years, you may take all the time you wish spending an evening at the Seven Stars. However, in 2007 be mindful of the fact that as it will be a special year some effort will me made to encourage some ''body'' to organise a major evening social either at the Caerberis Hotel or in the Wye Side Arts Centre. The above programme is a constructive alternative to spending most of ones time in Tafarn Llywelyn, when some thing bigger needs to be organised for 2007.

National 1282 Rememberance Sunday: If having stayed the night in Ardal Builth in the morning you may visit Cilmeri cenotaph (if not visited Saturday) and Abaty Cwm Hir, placing tributes there at the Cofiwn memorial in memory of Llywelyn III buried there in 1282. Dinner may be had in local Tafarn 'The Happy Union'. Further, to these commemorative events there is also such being held at Cofeb 1282 Caernarfon and at Llys Rhosyr, near Aberffraw, Ynys Mon. As well during 'National 1282 Remembrance Sunday' we ask one and all where possible to place crosses at the gates of English castles throughout the land, especially at the Edwardian Castles in the north particularly at gates of Caernarfon Castle. More information will be made available in due course.

Remember to wear The 1282 Rememberance ‘Cofiwn’ Ivy: Start to wear the ‘Cofiwn Ivy’ on the 1st Rhagfyr and conclude on 12 Rhagfyr annually also why not light 1282 Rememberance Candles on 11 Rhagfyr in memory of Llywelyn III, his priest and Teilu (the 18) also Byddin Gwynedd who met with death by muder and masscare during these three sad tragic days of Rhagfyr 1282. Last but not least as most of the events described above take place usually on weekends prior to or following 11 Rhagfyr annually, you could also on the 11 Rhagfyr organise suitable rememberance events and activities in your communities. Further, declare reagard 1 – 12 Rhagfyr as a ’1282 Rememberance’ period within which you can organise, as example an 1282 Exhibition in your local library and encourage schools to organise activities to inform children on the year of 1282. Much else you could do, similar to that promoted by Embassy Glyndwr regards promotion of 16 Medi ‘Dydd Glyndwr’. See their website and blog: Owain Glyndwr Communicates.

1282 Black Flag Campaign over period 1 – 12 Rhagfyr annually: Hang from your own flag pole and otherwise as you can creatively imagine where to place? Certainly in Caernarfon I would suggest there take place a 1282 commemorative march form Cofeb 1282 to the gates of Caernarfon Castle with plenty of 1282 Black Flags endeavouring in time to be able to march around that ‘Castle of Conquest’ with 100’s of 1282 Black Flags (Focusing patriotic minds on an Anti - Investiture III Campaign) and maybe similar in Builth Wells to mark 725th anniversary of 1282 in 2007. Busy time ahead.

1282 – 2007 PROPOSED NATIONAL COMMEMORATIVE PROGRAMME: Has stated above during 1982 Cofiwn members with other patriots organised a monthly series of commemorative events through out the land. The majority of these events back then turned out to be highly successful. Of course back then in 1982 there was much more patriotic unity and solidarity plus of course many more nationalists than there are today. However, let’s be optimistic and hope we can achieve what was achieved in 1982. Keeping in mind that it was these monthly events held all over the land that during course of year enthused patriots toward a massive mobilisation in Rhagfyr of that year which made possible 3000 patriots gathering at Cilmeri and then marching in and around Builth Wells. This commemoration concluding with a wonderful patriotic evening at the Wye Side Art Centre, hopefully such will be repeated in 2007. The 1982 Commemoration is all on film, may look some what vintage stuff but still fantastically stirring. So let’s go for it yes? Next year will be marked by commemorations prompted by the 'Antur Ysbryd Cofiwn' and hopefully organised by numerous groups in that connection, these events will be of local and national consequence. Now whose up for organising the ‘’kick off’’ at Castell Caergwle on the 31 March 2007 for a weekend commemoration which will conclude on 1 April 2007 ‘Sul y Blodau’ with a patriotic gathering at Hawarden Castle, anyone interested to contact.
Pic 2006: Castell Caergwle.

This historical event which will be of national import is that which marks the anniversary of the start of the 1282 war, this began when Dafydd III from his base at Castell Caergwle launched an attack on Castell Hawarden. This castle is not so far away from Castell Caergwle in an area heavy with history associated with the period of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd and his brother Dafydd. Note Dafydd was captured in 1282 and executed in Shrewsbury by means of being hung, drawn and quartered, there is a small plaque on bank in town centre recording this tragic event that took place on 3 Hydref 1282. Coffad 1282 Commemorations will take place in Caergwle on and around Palm Sunday of 2007 and hopefully thereafter will become annual event, if local patriots so wish?
The photo shows the flags of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd and of his brother Dafydd, view is toward Castell Hawarden to the east and England. Further information on the 1282 - 2007 Commemoration will be available soon, we shall provide details from where you may in time find information on this commemoration and ourselves help to publicise. The event described above regards episode that started war of 1282 took place on the eve of Palm Sunday in March of 1282, we can see that this is obviously an important historical event worth commemorating and certainly one that as an important anniversary stands fourth as the event to launch the 1282 - 2007, 725th anniversary commemoration. If you are keen to be involved in this commemorative event, help organise or participate in any way or have ideas then do get in touch asap.

NB: This Commemoration will be patriotic and positive, I have absolutely no time for ‘’knee Jerk Patriotism’’ nor ‘’belligerent pointless flag waving ultra nationalism’’. So anyone out there who imagines this will be a good idea to ‘’play silly games’’ or ‘’pull off stupid stunts’’. Then spend their time in the pathetic solitary pass time of fuelling their futile fantasies in ‘’rubbishy republican’’ web forum ‘’Dream Factories’’. I have one thing to say to you and that quite simply ‘BUTT OFF OK!’ There is a time and place for some patriotic flag waving but with some real sensible patriotic purpose and not of the nature and content as forementioned this is no more that ‘’Pathetic Peripheralism’’. Please note that this Antur Ysbryd Cofiwn is about a serious patriotic purpose and we do not want to see it used as a platform for ‘’patriotic plonkers’’, now I cannot be any more to the point that that accept by saying once more ‘BUTT OFF’. On the other hand those with earnest serious intentions and no devious motives are always welcome to participate in the type of serious endeavour that seen Cofiwn achieve a great deal over the years. For those who are not aware of this, this blog will inform you and remind others who have forgotten not least ‘’fair-weather friends’’.

Gethin.
